Destini! Who is Destini to KCS?

This letter is to recommend Destini as a recipient of a computer through the Kitsap Computing Seniors. New Horizons program.  Although I encounter many individuals who have various needs, Destini has stood out to me as someone who will not only make use of a computer to assist her in her academics, but that she will be someone who will give back to her community throughout her life.  She is currently a seventh grade student enrolled in Honors classes including Math, Science and Reading.  Destini is also engaged in a new class that focuses on pursuing college and her dream career as a veterinarian.  Her elective is choir.

I have known Destini for nearly 8 years.  She is an only child living with her mother and grandmother.  The family has resided in one of our isolated Public Housing neighborhoods since she was born.  Until recently, Destini's mother has slept on the living room couch so that Destini could have a room of her own.  It has not been easy for Destini to accept her mother's sacrifice.  She worries about her mom and wants the best for her.  She also believes in taking care of one's elders and she takes pride in her family.  I have never heard one complaint about anything she lacked.

Because Destini has always been so eager to help where she can and because she seems more mature for her age than other youth I have worked with, I invited her to become a part of Housing Kitsap's Teen Challenge program before she was actually a teen.  She blended right in with the other youth and attended every meeting.  She has helped to deliver holiday baskets to senior citizens and participated in a fund raising event at our company yard sale.  Destini has also sought employment with Housing Kitsap in a summer stipend position as a youth program assistant.  Last summer she worked hard to engage elementary youth in craft projects and recreational games.

It's hard to say all that I feel about this one young lady.  I believe in her.  I believe that she can achieve, that she will achieve many things, but that she'll never forget the struggle and because of that, she will offer her community compassion and insight.

MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEETING
November 21, 2011

President Larry DuSavage called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM at the Silverdale Community Center.  There were 58 members and guests present.  Larry welcomed all members and guests to the meeting and read the names of 3 new members who joined since the last meeting.  Those present joined Lenore Stanfel in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States.

Larry D announced that some positions on the Board of Directors will need new volunteers in March, and a volunteer for the position of Treasurer is needed now.  He also said that the New Horizons committee was able to donate a brand new laptop and printer to a young girl who qualified, and reminded us that if we are planning to buy a new computer, to think about donating the old one to the KCS New Horizons program.

Larry also reminded us that in March KCS will have its 20th anniversary, and that it is unusual for a volunteer organization such as ours to have survived that long.  He asked for suggestions from the members for a way to acknowledge and celebrate this special occasion.

Larry introduced our speaker, Loren Kelley, from Microsoft, who informed us that Windows 8 will be the next operating system, but it was too early for him to be able to talk about it. He said that Windows 7 will continue to be supported for 13 more years. Loren explained Microsoft's latest acquisitions, Skype and Nvidia, and said that anyone can have 25 free gigs, available on the Cloud. He demonstrated the voice activation of the phone by speaking orders into it.

Loren explained many of the Microsoft programs, such as "Peek" which will hide what you are working on when someone else comes into the room,  Windows Live Essentials, Windows Movie Maker, Photo Essentials, and Sky Drive, among others.  He answered many questions that were asked by an enthusiastic audience, and was given a big round of applause at the end.

The meeting adjourned at 11:35 AM for the Potluck Lunch, Raffle drawing and Door Prize drawing.

Operations — Lenore Stanfel reported that we don't have to worry about losing our meeting time as the YMCA does not need the room.

Membership — Carol McLaren reported that we have 233 members.  Two new members today.

Hardware — Kim Leach asked if we needed another microphone to pass around at the meetings. I was decided that we need  to ask the speaker to repeat the questions from the audience.

Education — Jack Roudebush reported that the classes have good attendance, but not the labs.  Possibly there are timing problems.  The school will be closed during the last 2 weeks of December so there will be no Bremerton Lab then.  Jack will hold a class on Voice Recognition on November 22 at the Bremerton Lab.  There will be no Sylvan Way Library Lab on November 25th as the Library will be closed.

SIGs — Don Brown reported that the Investors Group is still meeting on the 2nd Tuesday each month.

Programs — Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown is scheduled as our December speaker, Don Lawrence will again teach us about the latest rules for filing Federal Income Tax forms, and in February we'll have a representative from a Gig Harbor financial group.

New Horizons — Chris Barnett placed a computer with a senior, as well as the laptop placed with a student this month.  Chris will leave a supply of the new application forms in Room 13 for New Horizons requests.

Public Relations and Sunshine Committee — There were no cards sent out to members this month.  Lori Colby will get back to calling new members.

Newsletter Deadline — 22nd of this month.

New Business
  1. Won't have to move general meeting time.
  2. The Puget Sound Genealogy Society is planning a big meeting in August 2012.  KCS will have a booth there.
  3. Larry D described the surprise and shock of the Jr. High girl who received the donated new laptop and printer from New Horizons.
  4. Warren Beauchene discussed the problem of some of the KMUG group feeling they should not have to be a member of KCS in order to use our facilities.  It was pointed out that they are covered under our liability insurance, but if they leave they will not be covered.
  5. A suggestion was presented that we buy mouse pads or mugs to commemorate our 20th anniversary in March 2012.
  6. The Christmas volunteer appreciation luncheon will be held at Lenore Stanfel's house on December 8th at 11:00 AM.
  7. It was agreed to delay the Board of Directors  election until April 2012, as we will be too busy with the anniversary celebration in March to do both.
The meeting adjourned at 1:20 PM.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Well 'tis the season!
Merry Christmas, Happy New Years
and have a careful La Niņa winter in 2012!

This has been a wonderful year for Kitsap Computing Seniors. We have increased our membership, added more teaching time at the Sylvan Way Library once a month on Tuesdays and every Friday. Thank you Elaine Graham for teaching computer basic on Tuesdays' and the Friday volunteers of: Jack Roudebush, Don Brown, Kim Leach, Carol McLaren and Clint Geiger. Also Jack Roudebush, Don Brown, Kim Leach, Carol McLaren volunteer at the Mountain View Middle School computer lab every Tuesday afternoon during the school year.

We are a truly and extremely lucky organization to have the teacher extraordinaire Mary Ann Confar and her exemplary helpers Marlene and Pat Hogan to present wonderful classes every other Sunday to our members.

Our Board of Trustees has guided our organization to be an elite standout, one of a kind organization in the entire United States!

Thank You for your dedication: Ward Hinrichs, Barbara Maines, Clint Geiger, Lenore Stanfel, Carol McLaren, Kim Leach, Pat Reese, Jane Hinrichs, Faye Henden and Nick Tomassi for what you have provided our members.

We are coming up on a very special occasion on March of 2012. We need to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Kitsap Computing Seniors. Thank You to all present and past members of KCS for propelling us into history.

To maintain this elite organizational status we need a few good volunteers! We will have 3 board-of-trustees openings, with one being a treasure! A treasure is essential; training and programs will be provided! We always need more computer assistance at our classes and labs.

It has been a real pleasure for me to represent such a unique organization with outstanding members and volunteers as its president.

Getting a new computer for Christmas; consider donating your old computer to KCS's New Horizons!
HAPPY COMPUTING - Larry DuSavage

COOKING SPECIAL EVENT
11-12-2011

Chef Tom Rzegocki was true to his word . . . . he said we'd have fun and so we did!  KCS members and guests enjoyed Tom's terrific 3-hour presentation in the YMCA's beautiful gourmet kitchen.  Even though most of us have been cooking for years, we still came away with several new ideas and good information to stave off the boredom.

A Montessori teacher 5 days a week and a chef at other times, Tom continuously entertained us by demonstrating how to make a basic white sauce that can be used to prepare various dishes and soups, how to prepare a one-pan stir fry with ingredients on hand and how to roast root vegetables as well as other great cooking tips.  Chef Tom's creations were delicious and he answered many questions posed by the audience.  His focus is on simple,  economical, healthy and fresh homemade meals in small quantities for seniors.  We were given 4-page handouts with details and instructions for quick meal preparation, including a list of "must-haves" for every kitchen.

This was a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon and to gain new enthusiasm for cooking fresh and tasty meals.  Thanks, Tom!!

TIPS

Choose The Most Efficient Word Paste Settings For You
Adapted from an article by Susan Harkins at TechRepublic                                                                                                                            November 2, 2011

Word lets you decide how to most efficiently paste text. There are four flexible options that let you, not Word, decide how to paste.

               Ribbon

Some users spend a lot of time moving text within the same document or between documents. That can lead to additional formatting work if the destination document's formatting differs from the source. When this is the case, the Paste Special command can save you a bit of time. For instance, if you want the pasted text to adapt the destination document's formatting, you'd choose Keep Text Only from the Paste option's dropdown.

Choosing a special paste option is certainly more efficient than fixing the formatting after the fact, but if you have to choose a special option a lot, you might consider changing the default settings. Yes, you can do that!

To change the default paste settings, do the following:

  1. Click the File tab and choose Options (under Help). In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options.

  2. Choose Advanced in the left pane.

  3. In the Cut, Copy, and Paste section, choose the appro-priate option from the four pasting options.

  4. Click OK.
        Menu
There are four options, so Word's very flexible. For instance, if you usually choose Keep Text Only from the Paste option when copying text from a web page into a Word document, consider changing the Paste From Other Programs option to Keep Text Only. Word will then paste the text using the default paragraph formatting in the destination document. Most of the time, this setting will save you the extra step of reformatting the pasted text.

Most users won't search for these options because they won't realize they have this much control over the paste operations. The choices are self-explanatory for the most part; you just need to point the way.

Destini! What did KCS do for Destini?

Two anonymous KCS members decided they would purchase a brand new Toshiba Satellite Laptop Computer for her. Also a laptop carrying case and a wireless mouse were included in the purchase. Why a laptop was chosen: because Destini does not have an internet connection at home and she could take the laptop to the library or to school and get an internet connection!

Another anonymous KCS member donated a brand new HP LaserJet Printer! We just had an invited speaker who said the best value of a printed black and white page would be with a Laser printer.

My wife Janthina and I were chosen to present the new computer system to Destini! On November 14th 2011 we invited Laura Shafer, Destini and her mother to our house for the presentation. Destini was told the reason she was coming was to help some seniors! We guided them into the computer room and showed them the computers and pointed out that this laptop had Destini's name on the login. At that point we informed her that KCS New Horizons was presenting that computer system to her because of her hard work in school and her volunteering to help others. There was an absolutely memorable reaction from Destini to be cherished for the rest of our lives. She kept saying that she "could not believe this was happening to me". A very poignant observation that she made was that "my mother could also use this in her search for employment." She kept saying "Thank You Thank You! Thank You!"

The mission statement of the New Horizons subcommittee of KCS is to provide refurbished or new donated computer systems to members of Kitsap County in need. This includes seniors, vets, students, disasters losses and any others who qualify.

The New Horizons committee consists of co-presidents Chris Barnett and Dennis Osborn. Other members are Clint Geiger, Kim Leach, Lenore Stanfel, Quay Nary and Larry DuSavage. If interested in volunteering please contact a member of the committee above. It is a very personally rewarding committee.

If you are interested in donating a computer, monitor, keyboard and/or mouse contact an above member of the committee. We accept computer with operating systems of Microsoft XP, Vista or Windows 7. We can provide a tax deduction form for any working computer with Microsoft Vista or Windows 7. (NOTE: It helps if the operating system reinstall disk or partition is included. All personal information on a used computer will be totally deleted and the operating system reinstalled!)

Cable companies to offer $9.95 broadband for qualifying homes!

Cable companies said that they will offer Internet service for $9.95 per month to homes with children that are eligible for free school lunches.

The offer will start next summer and is part of an initiative the FCC cobbled together to get more U.S. homes connected to broadband. One third, or about 35 million homes, do not have broadband. That affects people's ability to educate themselves and find and apply for jobs.

The initiative, called Connect-to-Compete, also includes Microsoft Corp., which pledges to sell PCs with its Office software suite for $250 to low-income families. A firm called Redemtech is offering to sell refurbished computers for $150, including shipping.

All major cable companies are standing behind the $9.95 offer, which will be valid for two years. The price doesn't include taxes, but the companies are pledging to charge nothing for installation or modem rental.

The minimum download speed will be 1 megabit per second, but it will be up to the individual cable companies to decide what speeds they provide. There are estimates that about 5.5 million homes that don't have broadband will be eligible for the offer. NOTE: only 45 percent of people older than 64 presently have broadband.

Comcast Corp., the largest cable company and the country's largest Internet service provider, is already offering broadband to $9.95 to low-income families, with a 1.5 megabit per second download speed.
