SAVE THE DATE!!

On Saturday, November 12, 2011, KCS has a special event planned for its' members and guests.  Chef Tom Rzegocki will be demonstrating how to prepare simple economical and healthy home-cooked meals for seniors at the Haselwood YMCA in Silverdale.

Tom is a self-taught chef who has been preparing meals for family, friends and others for 25 years.  His particular desire is to focus a large part of his time on the ever-growing senior population, folks who are attempting to  remain independent in their homes as long as possible.  He has recently taught several series of classes for The Senior Housing Assistance Group (SHAG) based out of Seattle as well as for Seattle Central Community College and local Senior Centers.

Tom is a member of the U. S. Personal Chef Association and a graduate of the Culinary Business Academy.  He started his business, Tom's In-Home Cooking, in 2008 (www.Tomsinhomecooking.com).

There will be two 1-hour long classes:

1 PM . . .Tom will discuss and make white sauce which enables meals such as
chicken or beef pot pie, casseroles and cream soups.
3 PM . . . This class will cover fresh, quick meals like simple stir-fry, roasted
vegetables and soups using the fall harvest.

Handouts will be offered but not specific recipes as Tom will teach us how to prepare meals in various ways with the same basic ingredients.  Bring pen & paper for taking notes and be prepared to sample some delicious food!

COST:  $5 per person ( per class), checks payable to Kitsap Computing Seniors, P. O. Box 3166, Silverdale  WA  98383-3166.

CONTACT:  Lenore Stanfel (lstanfel@earthlink.net or 360 307-9325) for reservations and questions.  Please reserve by November 9 as space is limited and Tom needs time to shop for food & supplies.

MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEETING
October 17, 2011

President Larry DuSavage called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM at the Silverdale Community Center.  There were 45 members and guests present. Larry welcomed all members and guests to the meeting and read the names of 3 new members who joined since the last meeting.  Those present joined Vice President Ward Hinrichs in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States.

Larry D. made an announcement that the Club has sponsored a cooking class at the YMCA on Saturday, November 12.  The cost is $5 per person, and will feature meal preparation for one or two people.  More information will be available on the Newsletter and on the KCS Techlist.

Larry also said he would hold another Skype class on November 19 at the "A Frame Room". Lab Classes at the Mountain View Middle School are held Tuesdays at 2:45 PM.  There are free classes at the Sylvan Way library; classes are the second Tuesday of each month, and the lab is Friday afternoons.  Mary Ann Confar's classes are also available. Check the KCS Newsletter for specific time and dates.  Also, next March is the 20th anniversary of the founding of KCS.

Clint Geiger introduced the speaker, Robert Parker of The Printer People in Bremerton.  These people specialize in sales and repairs of large and small printers.  Mr. Parker's main theme was choosing a printer that suits your needs.  The amount of printing done per month is the basic criteria for choosing a printer.  The cheap, $99 printer is probably not a good investment.  Printer manufacturers make their main profit on selling ink cartridges and printer heads after you have bought their printer.  Laser printers are best for documents in large quantities, and ink jet printers are best for photos.

Mr. Parker urged people to buy what they need; do you need SD card readers. FAX capability, wireless features?  Check to see whether ink jet printers require separate printer head replacement, which could add to your overall cost.  His opinion is that Hewlett Packard printers are the best.

When you buy new ink cartridges read the expiration date and the ml content of the cartridge.

New cartridges over a year old should not be purchased. Refilled cartridges have about 2% failure rate, new ones are about ½ %.  He recommended that refilled cartridges be purchased from local dealers so they can be readily returned should they fail.

Printing paper should have the Colorlok symbol on paper reams and cases.  This ensures it has been manufactured to cause less paper dust, etc. that will clog the internal workings of a printer.

The audience had many questions for Mr. Parker at conclusion of his presentation.  Larry DuSavage thanked him and the audience joined in with applause. Mr. Parker said he would be glad to answer questions if contacted at his place of work.  He can be reached at his work phone of 360-377-6540, or his Email address of parker@TSCnet.com.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 AM for the Potluck Lunch, Raffle drawing, and the Door Prize drawing.

What! March 19, 2012! What is that?

WOW! It is the 20th anniversary of

Kitsap Computing Seniors!

KCS is a very unique organization which is rare in communities anywhere in the entire United States.

In March of 1992 Rampton Harvey held the very first general meeting of Kitsap Computing Seniors.

March 2012 will be approximately the 200th General Meeting of KCS!

So how do we celebrate this very special March 2012 General Meeting?

A parade and a marching band while carrying our computers down Silverdale Way!

A March members dunk in the Puget Sound!

Party poppers, non-alcoholic Champaign, singing and dancing!

What are your suggestions?

Please think about how you would like to have a memorable celebration for KCS on March 19, 2012 and pass that information on to a board member!

TIPS

Change the alignment for numbers in a list in Word
Adapted from an article by Susan Harkins at TechRepublic                                                                                                                               October 7, 2011

Word uses left aligned numbers in a numbered list, by default, but a right-aligned list of numbers is just a few clicks away.

Numbering a list in Word is simple. You select the items and click Numbering in the Paragraph group on the Home tab. If you're still using Word 2003, click Numbering on the Formatting toolbar. Despite how easy it is to use, you've probably noticed an odd default behavior - the numbers are left aligned, which isn't the normal format most of us will need.

You can fix the alignment, as follows:

  1. Select and then right-click the numbered list.
  2. Choose Numbering from the resulting menu. In Word 2003, choose Bullets and Numbering.
  3. Select Define New Number Format from the list below the gallery. In Word 2003, click the Customize button.
  4. In the resulting dialog box, choose Right from the Alignment dropdown. In Word 2003, you'll use the Number Position dropdown.
  5. Click OK. Word will immediately adjust the alignment of the numbered list.

Responding /Replying to a KCS TechList Post
  • Replies to messages on the KCS Tech List are automatically sent to the entire List unless you re-address the response directly to the individual sender.
  • Use caution when you click the REPLY button. Consider using the FORWARD button instead. In this way you won't burden others with unneeded e-mail.
  • When responding to a message, please consider whether your reply should be sent to the entire membership; if it would be more appropriate to address it to the individual sender, please use the Forward button and follow the steps below.
  • Do not post personal messages via the KCS Tech List. If a post announces a class assignment and you are, for example, sick and unable to come to class, do not reply to the list to tell the class coordinator that you won't be able to attend. Instead, send your e-mail reply directly to the coordinator's e-mail address.

Before you click SEND please double check to see you are sending the reply message to the intended address. Is it to be sent to the message sender or the entire list?

Here is one way to address your message directly to the sender only; not to the List:

1. Click on the received KCS TechList message.

At the top of the message text area you will see something like this:

----- Original Received Message -----

owner-kcstech@listserv.telebyte.com; on behalf of; Jane Doe [JaneD@comcast.net]
Sent: Tue 10/25/2011 6:39 PM
To: KCS Tech
Subject: [KCS-Tech] I have a Yahoo e-mail question!

2. Highlight the address on the From line after "on behalf of".   Make sure you highlight the entire address.
                                                                       Jane Doe [JaneD@comcast.net]
3. Click Edit > Copy (or hold down the Ctrl key and tap the C key)

4. Click Forward.

5. Click in the To address box and click Edit > Paste (or hold down the Ctrl key and tap the V key)

6. Your reply message is now addressed to the individual.

You can now type your reply and delete the original message text if you want.

7. Click Send.

NOTE: Your email program and internet service provider may display your message differently than the example above! But if you use the forward button and insert only the sender's email address, then the reply will be sent only to the sender and not the entire KCS TechList.
